PROVO – BYU men’s rugby team defeated Colorado State University in a 90-21 victory at BYU’s Helaman Fields on Saturday afternoon.

BYU’s win over CSU improved their record to 4-0 for the 2023-24 season, and this 90-21 victory marks their 4th consecutive win by at least 50 points. Following their win BYU ranks 6th in the national power rankings, per the Goff Rugby. With such results, fans and players alike have high expectations for this season and the eventual national championship.

In the 2022-2023 season BYU men’s rugby finished with an overall record of 12-3 but had a disappointing finish in the semifinals of the 2023 Division 1-A Rugby Championship, losing to the California Golden Bears 31-55. This year, BYU men’s rugby is “looking to push a little bit further” and win the national title.

“I think we’re on the right track,” said Tielu Sagala (#14), a senior on the team. “We’ll play teams that’ll be a little bit more competitive in the Spring or in the Winter semester… [but] right now it looks good and hopefully it continues.”

Fans of BYU men’s rugby also shared their hopes for this upcoming season:

“I believe in them. I believe they can do it,” said Star, an observer of Saturday’s game. “They can do it if they keep this momentum.”

“Year in and year out they’re always top 10,” said Max, another fan at the game. “They always have a shot.”

BYU finished as the runner-up in Division 1-A Rugby’s inaugural season back in 2011 and managed to win their one and only Division 1-A national championship the following year in 2012.

From 2013-2016, following a breakaway from Division 1-A, BYU participated in and won 3 national titles in the Varsity Cup Championship in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 seasons.

Since returning to Division 1-A in 2017 BYU has finished in the Elite Eight 3 times and the Final Four twice.

BYU men’s rugby’s next game will be against the University of Colorado this Saturday, November 4th at 2:00 PM.

Tielu and the BYU team also have their eyes on their final game of the Fall season against Lindenwood University, another semi-finalist at the 2023 national championship, saying “they should be a fun game.”
